This picture displays the fate of the Great Sphinx that guarded the entrance to the Necropolis at Giza, as it was through much of its existence. Today, the Great Sphinx is clear of sand, but many times in antiquity it was almost completely covered by the desert. Behind the Sphinx can be seen several of the Giza Great Pyramids.
