Little statuettes like this one were placed in a tomb as substitutes for the tomb owner when he was called upon in the afterlife to do his duties in the field. As many as 700 Shawbti (which can be made of wood, stone and frequently of blue faience, a rough glass substance) have been found in various tombs in Egypt.
