Flight Of The Holy Family in Egypt
|
Detailed Description
Papyrus width: 24" Papyrus height: 16-1/2" Papyrus Art width: 22" height: 14-1/2", Hand painted and signed on true, aged papyrus.
This papyrus depicts the Holy Family's flight into Egypt, a very common and much honored tradition in Egypt which is often depicted both in ancient and modern Christian art. Many sites within the Nile Valley and the Delta make claims that the Holy Family stopped or passed through during their travels in Egypt, and such locations are popular places of pilgramage.
This specific papyrus depicts the family possibly arriving in Memphis or a nearby village, with the Great Giza Pyramids in the background. Interestingly however, the Ablaq (alsternating Red and White) decorative entrance to the building and the Mashribiyya covered windows above the door and on the side of the building are pure Arab in nature, and would not find their way into Egyptian architecture for some time.
